About

ROSALIND WELSH

Rosalind Welsh attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City where she studied in the Fine Art department from 1975-1978. She exhibited her paintings, sculptures and installations in many group shows, alternative and traditional, in New York, New Jersey, Montreal and Maine from 1976-1986.

Roz returned to her hometown Damariscotta, Maine in 1986 at which time she concentrated on raising her son, and creating new pieces of art to be exhibited close to home. During this time her work could be found from O’Farrol’s Gallery in Brunswick to Artfellows Gallery in Belfast and many other Galleries between the two.

Many of her paintings are sewn canvases that are then painted in oil paints. In the first step, the sewing of the canvas, Roz is dealing with line light and shadows. She makes a pattern from her drawing, cuts the fabric from the pattern, and sews it together and stretches it out on stretcher bars. She then plays with light on the surface finding her image for the under painting. Second step, she paints the canvas. During this time she adds color, depth and found detail in the three-dimensional image. The final piece is a marriage of paint and sculpture.

In 2005 Welsh joined a group of fellow artists to open,” Water Street Artists at  The Stable Gallery” in Damariscotta, Maine. There she has exhibited her paintings, sculptures, instillation works and Jewelry in group shows. She continues to been an active member involved in all aspects of the running of the Gallery. You can see more of  Welsh’s work as well as the other members’ work at STABLEGALLERYMAINE.COM  The gallery doors are open mid May till mid. Oct.
